Concordia Center for Environmental Stewardship

The 13,365 square-foot, two-story Concordia Center for Environmental Stewardship was constructed on the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan taking advantage of the restored bluff and one-half mile of shoreline.

Plans for the center included laboratories, classrooms and a large seminar room that can accommodate 200 people for presentations. With its lakefront exposure, Concordia officials say the building is a center for the study of the Great Lakes and other environmental issues.

The building is certified as a LEED Platinum building and marks Jos. Schmitt & Sons first LEED efforts.

Concordia University Wisconsin received a check for $110,000 that month for their new Center for Environmental Stewardship. Reed and Steve Schmitt made the donation to CUW President Rev. Dr. Patrick T. Ferry on behalf of Jos. Schmitt & Sons Construction Company based in Sheboygan.

According to the President of Jos. Schmitt & Sons Construction Company, Steve Schmitt, the amount of the check was selected in commemoration of the company’s 110th anniversary in the construction industry. The check was dated on Father’s Day to honor Reed and Steve’s father, Donald Schmitt

Our company is committed to environmental education,” said Treasurer of Jos. Schmitt & Sons Construction Company, Reed Schmitt. “The Jos. Schmitt Construction Legacy Fund is in a position to make these types of gifts because of the hard work and commitment of the hundreds of craftsmen who have worked for our company over our 110 year history,” Schmitt added.
